Last summer, six friends took their friend Kevan, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, on a backpacking trip around Europe… Literally.
“My whole life has been about finding a balance between what I can physically do and what I want to do,” Kevan Chandler told People in August, 2016.
Kevan’s friends were up to that challenge when it came to them wanting to go on a European adventure together. When they started planning their journey, they had a mission: to pursue new ideas and answers to enhance the mobility of individuals with disabilities and their communities. From that, they started the “We Carry Kevan” project to develop the backpack they used to carry Kevan around Europe for three weeks, visiting places that in the past have not been handicap accessible.
On their website, the team says it is currently working with Deuter Sport GmbH to produce a backpack (available soon!) similar to the one they used to take their friend on the trip of a lifetime.
The team at We Carry Kevan will “also aid in collaborative adventures, developing a global network of able-bodied and disabled people who may work together to fulfill one another’s dreams.”
We look forward to seeing the backpack and what the We Carry Kevan team does next for accessible travel!
