Having a child who’s medically complex can mean something as simple as getting dressed for the day can be a bit of a challenge. Factor in things like a gastrostomy tube, a trach, and scoliosis & that can affect the types of clothing that will work well for your child. When dressing my daughter who has special needs, I try and focus on three key factors:  Affordability, comfort, and style.

Affordability: Let’s face it, there is a good chance that at some point during the day you’re going to have a tube feeding mishap or accidentally get medication all over the place so knowing that I am not spending hundreds of dollars on clothing that has the potential to get ruined makes me breath easier. There are some great affordable companies like H&M and Old Navy that help me to spread my dollar further when it comes to dressing not only my daughter but also myself.

Comfort: My daughter has scoliosis and muscle tightness in her legs and hips so I have to make sure that clothes are going to fit her well and be comfortable on her. She spends a lot of time in her wheelchair so elastic waistbands & tops with stretch and no zippers and buttons in the back work best for her. The Children’s Place and Target always have many great options in clothing made with stretchy fabrics, great prints, and mix & match options. I tend to look for pieces that I can easily get on and off of her in case we have accidents.

Style: Sweedie Kids is a great company that makes bandana style bibs and infinity scarves for babies all the way up to adult sizes. My daughter just happens to be a drooler and Sweedie Kids gives me the option of having a way to keep her clothing dry but not having to have her wear a typical “baby” style bib. I like to think of them as adding to her outfit and not taking away from it. Their bibs are made with organic jersey knit and have a fleece backing that makes the super soft and absorbent. They have so many great options and carry the best prints and colors and will usually have fun options around the holidays.
